We sat down with Lucas to discuss his illustrious career, his passion for the art of hairstyling, and the inspiration behind this exciting new chapter.
Tell us about your journey—how did you go from training in Paris to working in salons across Beijing and Shanghai?
I went to Paris to study due to a recommendation from a client in Shanghai. I trained at his brother’s shop, and it totally leveled up my skills while shifting my mentality.
What were some of the most valuable lessons you learned working in foreign salons in China?
I started working at CD-France in Sanlitun in 2009 and stayed there until 2013 – my boss had some issues, and she moved back to France.
Then, my friend suggested that I go to Shanghai where I went to work at a high-level foreign hair salon called Ciseaux. I worked there from 2013 to 2022 as the top stylist and manager.
However, during the pandemic, I lost a lot of clients, and at the same time, my former boss returned to Beijing. I resigned and went back to her salon because we used to have so much fun working together.
How would you compare the hair styling culture and trends between Paris, Beijing, and Shanghai?
Paris, Shanghai, and Beijing each showcase distinctive hairstyle trends.
Paris exudes refined luxury – leading global fashion with styles like ‘Leslie curls,’ which embody effortless French elegance.
Shanghai blends Haipai (East-meets-West) culture with diverse influences. You see Korean-inspired looks, see-through bangs, balayage, and layered bobs – the city is constantly redefining metropolitan chic.
Beijing draws from imperial heritage – pairing edgy pixie cuts, blunt bobs, retro lamb curls, and bold hair colors to express bold individuality.
Do you specialize in any particular styles, hair types, or techniques?
My style is mostly French, but I always design looks to fit what each client wants.
Once at a bar fashion show, I did a girl’s updo and make-up. She turned into a straight-up elegant beauty – the crowd went wild!
How do you stay updated on current trends, tools, and products?
All my hair-cutting tools are from the renowned German brand Jungle Panther, which are all professional hair care products. I read fashion magazines, as well as browse Instagram and YouTube to learn about the latest hairstyles and trends.
Have you ever had to adapt your technique for different hair textures or cultural expectations? Can you give an example?
Chinese people and foreigners have different hairstyles. The techniques for cutting their hair are the same; I just adjust according to different customer requirements.
There was one customer whose hair was so thin, so I suggested that she should get a short, layered bob! After her hair looks more voluminous and shining! I was so happy!
How do you approach building long-term relationships with clients, especially in a home-service model?
Over the years in China's foreign hairstyling industry, I've managed salons, worked as a top stylist, and built a great client base.
Both my bosses and customers love my work, and it makes them really happy – that's my biggest win!
What inspired you to shift to offering at-home styling services?
Because some of my regulars from the salon I used to work for live way out in the suburbs, and they found coming into the city inconvenient – so, I decided to provide home services.
How would you describe your signature style or aesthetic approach?
After years of experience, I know being professional and caring is key to keeping clients.
I specialize in designing hairstyles for different hair types and face shapes. I understand how these things work together, and I nail your vision every time. I’ll also share handy hair care tips!
After each service, I follow up to see how your style is holding up – building long-term trust with skills and sincerity.
