As Chinese New Year draws near, WeChat has quietly dropped an update that’s set to spice up your festive celebrations.

The latest 8.0.56 version now allows users to upload their own photos and create personalized hongbao ('red packet' or 'red envelope') covers — just in time for the upcoming holiday season!

Imagine sending a red envelope with a photo of your pet, a scenic view from your last trip, or even a selfie with your friends or loved ones.

With this new feature, your WeChat Red Packet is not just a gift of money, but a personalized touch that makes the exchange even more meaningful.

How Does It Work?

To create your own red packet cover, simply upgrade to the latest version of WeChat, and when you’re about to send a hongbao, you’ll see the 'Red Packet Cover' and 'Create My Cover' options.

Just select your photo from the gallery, and voila!

You’ve created a custom envelope that will show up alongside other brand-customized covers in the 'My Red Packet Cover' section.

But that’s not all. If you receive a DIY Cover red packet from someone, you can also design your own by heading to the 'Create My Cover' option at the top-right corner of the screen after opening the envelope.

Want even more options?

Simply search for '制作我的红包封面' in WeChat’s 'Search' function and get started right away.

This is not the first time WeChat has offered custom red packet covers.

The feature first launched in 2019, initially targeting businesses who wanted to create customized covers for their employees.

It wasn’t until January 2021 that individual users could also apply for their own red packet designs, but only if they had set up a video account with certain qualifications.

Since then, customized red packet covers have exploded in popularity across the platform.

Now, the ability to create your own cover has been simplified and expanded, allowing everyone to add a personal flair to this beloved tradition.

Why It Matters

In China, giving hongbao during the New Year is not just about the money inside.

It’s a way of expressing good wishes, and customizing the envelope adds an extra layer of personal meaning to the exchange.

Whether it’s for family, friends, or colleagues, this little personal touch is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
