On December 27, EAST Beijing — in partnership with its art project partner ucvibes — was delighted to present a unique art exhibition featuring China Chic artist YY. The exhibition, curated by ucvibes will run through February 2025. It aims to convey joy, luck, and love through the power of art to each and every guest.
Spanning across the hotel lobby and the second floor FEAST (Food by EAST), the exhibition is divided into three parts. Artist YY, with his distinctive China Chic style, transforms the symbols of wealth and luck from Chinese classical culture — Guan Yu and the 2025 zodiac snake — into approachable modern figures.
Guan Yu is no longer just the God of Wealth from traditional stories, but also an ordinary person standing by our side — cycling, cooking, and celebrating festivals with us. The zodiac snake, ‘88,’ takes on the image of street basketball, traversing between the classical and the contemporary — offering viewers a visual feast.
A particularly special highlight was the surprise unveiling of the lobby's China Chic art light installation on the evening of December 27, when the hotel's general manager Pieter Ham and artist YY jointly unveiled the bright new installation.
The auspicious zodiac beast is an indispensable element in the traditional Chinese New Year and a symbol of luck. As the curtain slowly falls, the lucky zodiac snake ‘88,’ wearing a trucker hat and playing street basketball, will move in a figure-eight above the audience's sight, traversing from the classical culture to modern life.
YY firmly believes that art can be light-hearted without being frivolous, and popular without being superficial. His works not only showcase the charm of China Chic art but also express a life attitude. EAST Beijing hopes that through this exhibition, the integration of ‘Chinese tradition’ and ‘modern life’ will be presented to the audience, allowing art to permeate every aspect of our lives and convey a positive energy.
Artist YY, Yu Yang, is one of the most important artists in the field of China Chic art. He was born and raised in the compound of the Ministry of Culture. Since childhood, he has been inspired by — as well as learned from — Chang Shana, Zhang Ding, Yuan Yunfu, and other important artists of the previous generation.
He received a double master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University and the Hunter College School of Art in New York. His works have been exhibited at many significant landmarks and public spaces. This collaboration with EAST Beijing will further expand his influence in the art world.
EAST Beijing looks forward to your visit and for you to experience this perfect fusion of art and life with them, as well as celebrate every lucky moment of love and all the joyous parts of the upcoming festivals together.
