Scene & Heard: Mocha

Mocha is a new cat cafe on Fangjia Hutong that is all about the furry felines, and none of the chaos that typically ensues when cats, food and children are involved. It’s not a cafe at all really, aside from the basic coffee options on offer at the entrance. The concept here is ‘pay to play’ – RMB30 grants you 30 minutes of nothing but pure joy in a large room where over eight cats roam freely. It also gets you one complimentary drink, but we long forget about our lattes after we’re granted access inside (which involves a monitored hand wash followed by hand sanitizer).

Once inside, the cats are fair game for some prime cuddle time. They’re all rather playful, and none are locked sadly inside their cages or hiding under tables from rowdy kids (though, that’s because Mocha doesn’t allow young patrons under the age of 12 – a selling point for humans and cats alike). There’s also a video game zone and board games for you to bust out if you’re planning on lounging here for the majority of the afternoon (+RMB1 for every extra minute).
