Great Leap Brewing #12 Brewpub will close this week after five years of operation, founder Carl Setzer announced today. Its last day open will be this Thursday, May 10.
The sudden closure comes as a surprise to fans of the popular brewery, affectionately called 'the burger Great Leap' and 'the Sanlitun Great Leap.' The brewery's Sanlitun location is the only one that serves its famous burgers.
"The past couple years has seen Beijing change its attitude towards the food and beverage industry, and that has now reached Great Leap Brewing as well," Setzer writes on Great Leap Brewing's website. "The landlord at Ziming Mansion, where we have been located for the last five years, is adamant that there will no longer be tenants using this property for any and all food and beverage services. [...] We've done nothing wrong, this isn't a punishment, it's just the trend in Beijing right now."
Great Leap #12 is just one of many restaurants and bars that have closed over the past year, amid a citywide crackdown on such businesses.
But it's not all bad news – Great Leap Brewing will open a new location in Lido this fall, Setzer announced in the same post. And #12 Brewpub's burgers will be served in Great Leap's #45 location in Liangmaqiao starting this week.
The #12 Brewpub will continue to serve as Great Leap's corporate headquarters, as the brewery continues to plan its forthcoming Tianjin production facility.
