The 2018 Beijing International Film Festival has pulled acclaimed film Call Me by Your Name from the line-up.
Although no official reason was given, it is likely that the film’s content didn’t meet the requirements of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. The drama focuses on a romance between a 17-year-old boy and a college graduate student set in 1980s Italy, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
LGBT content has had a difficult relationship with regulators. While some films have passed through state screening, others have had a more difficult time, with many being heavily restricted or even pulled entirely. Wu Jian, a Beijing-based film analyst told Reuters that Call Me By Your Name was in “deviation from the policy environment in China,” and stated that the withdrawal was “quite embarrassing for China.”
The critically-acclaimed drama won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay at this years’ ceremony, while it was met with a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival last January.
The 2018 Beijing International Film Festival runs from April 15-22.
