Beijing Hikers’ Fourth Annual Hiking Festival is an excellent way to escape from the city for a day. Hikers have the choice of two different trails. The first will be the Hike for Fun, a 10km hike that goes through a rough and unrestored line of the Great Wall up to a 1034m beacon tower and then down along a ridgeline.
This one’s an excellent choice for beginners, families and those wanting to take it a bit more slowly. The second trail – appropriately referred to as The Challenge trail - requires a bit more endurance and determination. It extends a whopping 24km across some pretty mountainous terrain, which delivers an ideal trek for experienced hikers.
Careful consideration of each route means that everybody should finish at a similar time and place for the picnic and prize-giving. The organization arranges everything; all the hikers have to do is show up with hiking gear and some food. The trail will be pre-marked, and prizes will be given to those who join, courtesy of Ganges Indian Restaurant, Mantra Bar and Factory Fresh. Last year roughly 100 people signed up, and more are expected this time around.
Sat Sep 9, 6am; RMB500 (for 10km hike) / RMB700 (for 24km hike) Beijing Hikers, see event listing. Click here for tickets and information.
