Air China will resume flights between Beijing and North Korea beginning May 5. The state-owned airline recently announced cutbacks to flights to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang due to poor ticket sales and has not offered flights between Beijing and Pyongyang since April 14.
Earlier this month, an Air China representative said that the carrier was temporarily decreasing the number of flights to North Korea based on a decreased demand in tickets. The cutbacks were made official on April 17.
There has since been widespread speculation on social media that the service would be cancelled for the remainder of the year. The airline has now confirmed that they have no plans to cancel the route.
Air China began flying to Pyongyang in 2008 and has long been the only foreign airline serving the North Korean capital. The carrier has regularly offered three flights a week – on Monday, Wednesday and Friday – between the months of March and November each year.
Starting Friday May 5, Air China will start offering twice-weekly flights between Beijing and Pyongyang on Mondays and Fridays, NK News reports. The route will run until October 27.
