5 Places to Watch The Super Bowl

What is a Super Bowl? non-Americans ask amidst the deluge of pre-game media. Let us explain. It is the final showdown in the NFL season, but it’s more than a sports match. It is an American festival of eating, drinking and generally not minding the colossal commercialization that comes with any American festival of eating and drinking.

It’s also really early. Kickoff’s at 7am (Mon, Feb 8).

We honestly can't think of a less Chinese way to spend the first day of Chinese New Year. But no matter. Because this year’s match is during Spring Festival, you can slide back into bed after watching. Here are our picks for Super Bowl festivities.

Centro
Best For Die-Hard Fans

The Kerry Centre’s delightful bar is home to NFL China’s official viewing party. As such, they’ll be pulling out all the stops – an American set breakfast and free-flow Budwesier beer (or fruit juice) for RMB238 a person. To reserve, call (8565 2398) or email fbreservations.hbkc@thekerryhotels.com

The Local
Best For Rowdy Groups of Friends

The Sanlitun favorite is selling tickets (RMB100 in advance, RMB130 door) that include breakfast and two drinks. Last year’s Super Bowl party was packed, so we suggest booking in advance. To reserve, call (6591 9525).

Paddy O'Shea's
Best For Saving Money

Your best bet if you’re on a budget, Paddy’s will charge you RMB100 to enter but then deduct that from your bill later. This being Paddy’s there’ll also be drink specials. We have our fingers crossed for free shots, too. They tend to do that. No need to reserve.

Home Plate BBQ (Sanlitun)
Best For Authentic American Food

One of the most American places in town, Home Plate’s offering a truly American breakfast buffet and – what else? – Budweiser. (Don’t worry, though – there’s coffee too.) Your ticket (RMB275 in advance, RMB300 door) also enters you into prize raffles. To reserve, call (400 096 7670).

Cu Ju
Best For Hutong Dwellers

This is likely to be the most intimate Super Bowl party of them all – Cu Ju’s selling only 20 tickets (RMB300), which include an open bar, all-you-can-eat Moroccan food and jambalaya. To reserve, email Cuju at cujubeijing@gmail.com.

Super Bowl 50 starts at 7am, Monday, February 8.
