Thu, Apr 18: After-After-Party

Hong Kong-based act After-After-Party arrive on the Chinese mainland this week, with shows in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, as well as Yangshuo. Equipped with humorous songs about the perils of online dating, and having previously performed at Clockenflap in Hong Kong wearing wedding dresses, After-After-Party are a viciously funny lo-fi punk band. Support will be provided by Mott and Huo Hua.

Russian act Bad Zu fuse grime and tribal African music, to create a style totally unexpected from a band from the North European nation. Head over to their Soundcloud to hear tracks like ‘House of Zu’ and ‘Smile Against Bullet’ each of which exemplify their varying approaches to music. Vibey stuff, this threesome should get even the most timid of clubgoers going this Thursday.

Fri, Apr 19: Bigger Than Us: TED 2019 Conference Livestream

Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Nanshan are putting together this screening of the upcoming TED Talks in Vancouver, Canada, which takes on the theme ‘Bigger Than Us.’ The TED Talks sessions will be exploring technologies that evoke wonder, future-shaping science, mind-expanding creativity and the inspiring possibilities that arise when we ask what ideas are worth fighting and living for.

Sat, Apr 20: Cold Meat Industry

Cold Meat Industry has been used as a term to describe avant garde bands interested in industrial and metal sounds. Stella Promotions present a trio of acts at B10 this weekend that fit under this term slash music genre. Swedish acts Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio and In Slaughter Natives, are joined by Belgian band Empusae for what should be an epic evening of dark sounds.

Sun, Apr 21: Les Miserables

While this is a screening and not a live performance with actors or a set, the thrill of Les Miserables is enough to make us eager to want to enjoy this musical in the company of others. Initially based upon the Victor Hugo novel of the same name, this stage show has achieved fame via its showings on Broadway, the West End and its fantastic cinematic turn in 2012, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.

Sun, Apr 21: Sword Fighting Competition

Getting in on the Game of Thrones action this weekend, Woodpecker Smokehouse are putting on a sword fighting competition. With a one-versus-one, round-robin format, the venue are keen to find out which of the participants would survive in Westeros. Customers are also encouraged to wear costumes, with prizes awarded for best dressed and also for best drinker. We feel like we may have a shot at the latter.
