The May issue of That's Shanghai is out now – paper-and-ink-form citywide, digital pdf-form right here or in your browser here.
Rolex-wearing, Porsch-driving, Gucci-bag-carrying, home-buying and Champagne-sipping: China’s new money is a thing to behold. They peer at you from RMB10,000 tables in the city’s showiest clubs. They sneer at your from the front of planes while you trudge toward economy. They are the Bling Dynasty, minted kids of the Mainland, the second-generation rich – fu’erdai – who have grown up buoyed by success and society’s infatuation with money. You probably think you know them.
Yet when we took a deeper look at their lives for this issue (check out p64 for an infograph on how they blow their cash), we discovered being a billionaire isn’t all about wine and leisure. These people have problems too, believe it or not. And there are many who are trying to shift from crass to class. Intrigued? Go to p56.
As for the rest, Erik Crouch charts the history of scams in Shanghai on p14, while photographer Tim Franco takes you on a visual whirlwind tour of Chongqing on p17 – if you think the concept of ‘Blade Runner meets urban farming’ isn’t a thing, think again.
Style-savvies out there can find a complete guide to what we learned at Shanghai Fashion Week on p30, while Andrew Chin has made sure to quench all of your music, culture and arts fixes in the Arts section starting p42. Wanna read about Owl City coming to Shanghai? Check p44. Keen to hear about the next generation of Chinese art-rock? Go to p46. Interested to know what the West Bund museums have been up to? Read up on p52.
Food and Drink editor Betty Richardson has done her part too, and scoured the best alfresco spots in town to get your outdoor eat and drink on (best terraces at formal restaurants and also cafes and casual restaurants) as the weather finally turns nicer. Jump to p68 if you want to start planning your summer weekends now.
Finally, before I leave you with this packed packed issue:
We are selling tickets to Brawl on the Bund y’all, so get in touch to ensure you don’t miss the action!
And I’d like to send a big thank you to the incredibly talented Cruz Maria Vallespir of KTGA, who helped us illustrate this cover story, and our model, DJ Cavia, who offered to play the part of ‘rich pimp.’
Don’t hate him if you see him around – he’s a normal folk just like the rest of us, I promise.
Marianna Cerini, Editor in Chief.
