Buxom Rebellion: jobless models protest showgirl ban at Shanghai Auto Show

Showgirls put out of work by this year's ban on models at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition staged protests at the exhibition center and in the middle of Xujiahui today.

Donning hobo-chic outfits and mock-begging at the curbside outside Metro City and in Xujiahui Station, the unemployed models carried placards saying "we want to survive!" and decrying that all their efforts at slimming had been in vain.

Career options are still plentiful, however. They could just change their job title to "female assistants" or get floor plans painted on their backs at real estate expos

At least it's heartening to see civic action so readily accepted in the country, even if it is just because the 'cause' is hopelessly innocuous and probably just a publicity stunt

Some might accuse the government of hypocrisy by pointing to the fact that five women's rights activists were just detained for a month after trying to stage a demonstration against sexual harassment and yet twice as many models can demonstrate freely - but not us.
