The Punchline Comedy Club is back with some of the UK’s leading comedy talent, including longtime BBC favorite and twice winner of the London Comedy Festival’s Award for ‘Best Live performer’ John Moloney; writer, broadcaster and all around funny guy Jeremy O’Donnell; and batsh*t eccentric Irish comic Andrew Stanley. We caught up with sharp-witted John Moloney ahead of the trio’s forthcoming Shanghai shows at the Hacienda on January 23 and at the Kerry Hotel, Pudong on January 24.
You’re a qualified French and German teacher – are you funny in other languages (Chinese)?
I wish I was funny in other languages, then I would be the most famous comedian in the world! Truth be told, it’s hard to be funny in German, even for Germans.
In your career, which opening joke has gone down the worst?
Opening jokes are the most important, as that’s when people judge you the most; a bad first joke can easily turn into a bad show, so luckily I have always picked my opening one-liners very, very carefully!
Let’s hear your favorite?
I went to see a child psychologist. He was rubbish, he was only seven.
That’s a good one. Let’s suppose for a moment that you weren’t a comedian, what do you think you’d be instead?
Very unhappy. Being a comedian is the best job in the entire world and I still love it even after 25 years.

You’ve been touring almost nonstop now for the best part of two decades. What’s the biggest crowd you’ve ever played to?
Probably 7,000 or so people in a hockey stadium in Canada. It was an unforgettable evening.
You’ve been to China before, describe it in one line?
Err... magical and hypnotic... a place I could easily fall in love with.
Love is a powerful emotion, John. Returning to matters of the head, rather than the heart, you’ve got a much publicized brand new BBC Radio show launching later this year – what should listeners in China expect?
Comedy monologues and outright hilarious sketches, featuring some of the very best in British comedy talent.
Sounds good. OK, comedy aside, what’s your most unusual skill?
I can play the accordion! Come to the show, I’ll play you a tune!
Really?
Probably not... but I will tell some jokes and make you laugh.
