A Shanghai man surnamed Zhang is seeking RMB100,000 in compensation from a local eatery after he found a dead rat in his dinner last weekend.
Mr. Zhang and his family had already eaten half their meal at the South Memory Hunanese restaurant in Bailian Xijiao Shopping Mall when they made the grim discovery on November 22.
When they saw the "large-headed" rodent lurking beneath some rice noodles, not only did some of Zhang's ten fellow diners vomit on the spot, but customers from adjoining private rooms also rushed in to gawk and spewed their guts everywhere.
When Zhang called over a server, she quickly snatched up the dish and made off with it. Luckily, they'd already taken plenty of pictures to serve as evidence.
The manager then emerged to suggest they switch the dish for a new one and give the group RMB1,000 in South Memory vouchers. Understandably, Zhang and co. were having none of it.
Initially, South Memory agreed to compensate Zhang RMB20,000, a sum both sides agreed to, in exchange for keeping the incident from the press and police. When Zhang reported the incident anyway, the restaurant management said that their previous agreement was now void and refused to give Zhang the money.
This, however, all prompted Zhang to bump up the compensation demanded to RMB100,000, an amount he claims is necessary to cover the psychological damage incurred as well as hospital check-ups for everyone, since he fears the rat could have been diseased or killed by poison.
The restaurant is currently under investigation from the relevant government organs.
