WIN! Tickets to see Hong Kong indie-rockers and new Maybe Mars signees, The Yours

For over seven years, Beijing indie label Maybe Mars has been a vital force in Mainland indie rock. It’s a legacy that its newest act The Yours is excited to add to.

“I used to listen to a lot of their bands like Snapline, Carsick Cars and Birdstriking and always felt that they didn’t really have that South China market,” guitarist-singer Pakting Ting says.

“Maybe they didn’t see any bands here worth signing but, in fact, there are many good bands here. I’m really happy that we were the first band from Hong Kong that they signed.”

The Mainland’s influence can be felt throughout the quintet’s sophomore album Teenagarten. After making their inaugural tour across the Mainland last year with The Subs, the group were inspired by the Beijing staple’s attitude and energy.

When Carsick Cars frontman Zhang Shouwang suggested the quintet record with P.K. 14 frontman Yang Haisong, The Yours quickly agreed. Last winter, they took a week off their day jobs to record Teenagarten in Beijing.

“His style is more about live recording, which we had never done before,” Ting says. “We found that really exciting because all the bands we love like Sonic Youth and Pavement do it this way. When we came back to Hong Kong, we helped a band called Murmur record in this way.”

Released this month, Teenagarten is a snarling continuation of The Yours’ post-punk sound and youthful heart. While its name is an amalgamation of teenage and kindergarten, Ting insists its not solely aimed for the kids but “for people who still have dreams and are young at heart.”

While Ting remains surprised that “the audience could sing along with us” during their Mainland tour last year, he promises a rawer experience in their upcoming 12-city tour that includes a stop at Yuyintang on September 20. “It’s going to be more energetic, more powerful and more punk,” he promises.

// Sep 20, 9-11.30pm, RMB50-60. Yuyintang.
