Dyson today revealed the Dyson Digital Slim vacuum, a lightweight and powerful cord free vacuum engineered to deliver a barefoot clean. The new Dyson Digital Slim vacuum is the lightest Dyson cordless stick to date, weighing only 1.5kg with the mattress tool. It is 20% smaller and 30% lighter, with no loss of suction, featuring a powerful Dyson Hyperdymium motor, highly efficient cyclones and carbon fibre filaments for fine dust pick up.

Engineered with Chinese owners in mind, home trials in Shanghai were conducted to better understand cleaning habits and the ergonomics behind cord free vacuuming. Dyson engineers discovered cleaning is more frequent in Chinese homes, requiring a machine with deep and well-rounded capabilities, and that the prevalence of hard floors demands superior fine dust pick up. In developing the Dyson Digital Slim vacuum, Dyson engineers focused on making a lighter machine more suited to frequent cleaning habits, with powerful suction to give a barefoot clean.

Dyson’s Lightest Cord-Free Vacuum, with Strong Power and No Loss of Suction

Led by the guiding principle of lean engineering, Dyson engineers set about producing a machine that was not only lightweight using fewer resources and less energy, but that actually worked. They wanted to develop a machine that would concentrate all of the superior Dyson V11 cord-free technology into a lightweight machine.

“To make a strong-performing vacuum, it must effectively capture fine dust and allergens and maintain constant powerful suction. In our latest machine, we set about going even further, seeking to condense our proprietary cleaning technologies, making our lightest machine to date while refusing to sacrifice cleaning performance. Starting at the floor we’ve completely re-engineered our soft Fluffy cleaner head, introducing a new light and robust brush bar, giving a compact and lower profile cleaner head for tight spaces and improved edge pick up. The machine is then powered by our lightweight Dyson Hyperdymium motor and 11 precisely engineered cyclones which ensure no loss of suction.” said James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer.

Dyson Pioneering Technology Condensed, Realizing Unparalleled Cleaning Performance

An Adapted Dyson Hyperdymium Motor

The motor is 15% smaller than the Dyson V11 vacuum motor. It can spin up to 120,000rpm to generate 100 Air Watts of powerful suction. Its ceramic shaft is cured at 1,600°C to make it twice harder than steel, yet with half the density.  26 engineers have worked on the motor completing more than 20,000 hrs of testing.

11 Scrolled Cyclones & 5-Step Filtration System

At 100,000g, the 11 scrolled cyclones of 5% smaller size - have been redesigned to fit the machine and ensure they remove more dust and dirt from the airflow. A wider radius at the entry point reduces energy losses, scrolling air in at a less tangential angle to reduce air resistance. As the cyclones narrow, air is accelerated to create the centrifugal forces that capture fine particles.

Properly functioning cyclones are key to no loss of suction as it means less fine dust is pushed to the pre/post motor filters.  Efficient cyclones topped with a powerful Dyson Hyperdymium motor generates one continuous airflow from the cleaner head pick up through the cyclones and filter out to the exhaust and it is this harmonious engineering and technology that enables Dyson to produce best-in-class vacuums.

Its whole machine filtration captures 99.97% of microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns, expelling clean air. With an airtight gasket around the cyclone assembly and a pressurised rubber seal around the advanced filter, the whole system is fully sealed – preventing dust from leaking back into the air.

Engineered for the Chinese Family, Enabling Easier Home Lifestyle with Dyson Technology

Through detailed and focused studies, Dyson has been able to innately understand local consumers’ cleaning pain points. According to Dyson’s latest research, Chinese users tend to do house cleaning more frequently but spend less time on it. Moreover, for most of Chinese families, daily cleaning has become a 3D battle. That’s why Chinese consumers need a truly lightweight cord-free vacuum that sets them free from the daily burdens of house cleaning.

A New Soft Roller Cleaner Head

Dyson engineers successfully made the original soft roller cleaner head smaller and lighter by 40%, with a 20% lower profile and 29% shorter diameter. Dyson engineers also stitched the carbon fibre filament and felt on the cleaner head together, rather than using adhesive, which enabled significant weight-loss. Despite the downsizing, the Dyson Digital Slim vacuum achieves similar pick-up as the V11 cord-free vacuum, picking up large debris and fine dust simultaneously from hard floors which are common in Chinese homes.

The airflow path through the cleaner head was also re-engineered to create a more direct path for the airflow. Smoothing out sharp corners and creating a more direct and even route for the airflow from the floor into the neck of the cleaner head means better edge cleaning performance.

Removable Battery Cells

The removable, fade-free, energy-dense battery is made up of five nickel-cobalt-aluminium battery cells that run for up to 40 minutes in eco mode on hard floors.  The battery is also swappable, providing up to 80 minutes run time in eco mode.   It can also be charged away from the machine.

Ergonomics and LCD screen

Dyson engineers also made a lot of improvements in ergonomics to best suit Chinese consumers and increase their comfort. It has a better grip. The circumference of the handle has been made smaller allowing for an easier and more comfortable grip for people with smaller hands.  The shape of the trigger and dust bin has also been contoured for greater comfort for a finger.

It’s also intelligent, with an LCD screen that shows 12 machine statuses, including the cleaning mode, and remaining run time, as well as offering filter maintenance reminders and blockage reports.

Diversified tools for easy maintenance

The purple Dyson Digital Slim Fluffy Extra comes with nine attachments in total, including the brand-new lit crevice and reach under tool. It can clean floors, mattresses and hard-to-reach areas, satisfying Chinese consumers common demands for whole-house cleaning.

For Chinese consumers used to cleaning their machine periodically, maintenance is easier as the machine has been engineered for smoother, easier dirt ejection. Consumers can clear the bin without touching any dirt. The brush bar, clear bin, combined pre/post motor filter, and light-up crevice tool are all washable.

The Dyson Digital Slim will be available from June 10, 2020 at Dyson’s online store and Dyson Demo stores. There are two versions, with Dyson Digital Slim Fluffy Extra pricing at RMB4,190 and Dyson Digital Slim Fluffy pricing at RMB3,690.
