Shanghai sports friends, here we go again. The Camel and That’s Shanghai 9th Annual Sports Awards will take place on February 21. Once a year, we gather to recognize those who have truly made their mark on the city’s amateur sports scene: from the home-run hitters and KO punchers, to those who lift up their mates when all seems lost. They’re our friends, our family and, occasionally, our blood-thirsty rivals.

There are 16 awards across six categories in the general selection, plus three Under 18s categories with 12 awards to be won, with big prizes from F45 and REVO up for grabs. There will also be a raffle fundraiser on the night, with all money raised from that going to the Baobei Foundation.

And now, without further ado, here are the nominations for Player of the Year (U18):

WISS - Serena Carpinelli Carranza

Serena Carpinelli is a Grade 8 student at the Western Western International School of Shanghai and in her second year of playing for the Tigers High School Girls Basketball Team. Serena has an extreme passion/love for basketball and it shows on the court game in and game out. She lead the team in all categories (minutes played per game, points per game, assists, steals). She displays true sportsmanship on and off the court, is a great teammate, a true all-around player and a pleasure to have represent our WISS Tigers Athletic Program.

Active Kidz - Marcel Petrov

In 2018, Marcel Petrov was the youngest member in the AKSIL U14 Mutants Team. He was also called upon to help with AKSIL ReUnited U16 Team in some league games. An avid striker, Marcel earned multiple Golden Boot Awards in the local Shanghai leagues and international tournaments during the 2018 season. He continues to exhibit and demonstrate competitiveness and leadership and stand out as an individual with high motivation, dedicated, committed with good work ethic. At his age, his contribution to games is magnificent and gives his ultimate best when given the opportunity. Currently 13 years of age, Marcel has been training with AKS since he was 7 years old. In addition to his prowess on the soccer field, Marcel is an outstanding student and excels in the classroom.

SUIS - Joshua Chien

Joshua Chien is the standout nominee for U18 Player-of-the-Year. He is an all-round athlete and role model. As the varsity basketball captain, football goal keeper, track and field champion, judo expert, dance specialist and AKSIL coach at Active Kidz Shanghai. His inner drive for progress and work ethic are exemplary. JC is the absolute student-athlete. He has also found an incredible balance between his academic, artistic and athletic talents.
