1591 was a year marked by tragedy.
The near death of the troublesome King James VI of Scotland was the first seismic wave to shake the people, but the real travesty was what would follow.
When James and his wife Anne of Denmark-Norway were met by a horrendous storm on their journey back to Great Britain, fearful of what she did not understand, Anne believed dark magic was the source of their life-threatening voyage. Mother Nature had been corrupted, and devils had been sent to climb the keel of the ship. The king went on a two-year campaign to catch and kill all witches, and Agnes Sampson was just one of them.
Agnes was a healer and a midwife, a woman who, of the people, was a mystical one nonetheless. She was captured, imprisoned and the king himself questioned her, shaving her head in search of the devil's mark. She cried, she denied, she claimed she had nothing to do with the storm, nor did she attend the witches' coven on Hallow's eve. Eventually, tortured and tired, her spirit broke and she confessed to conspiring with Satan.
She was strangled and her body was set ablaze.
