Original Coffee is a little cafe about to make some big noise in the caffeine scene around Xintiandi. Made up of a single table and a few stools, this is the perfect spot to stop in should you want a quick, delicious takeaway coffee while avoiding the lackluster chains dotting the area.
It’s owned by Wayne Qiu, a Taiwanese businessman who imports beans green from Kenya, South Africa, South America and Ethiopia and roasts them in his Shanghai workshop. The resulting brews range in price from RMB12-25 for espresso-based drinks and RMB33-38 for single-origin brews. Fresh milk is imported from Taiwan. The most unusual offering you’ll find is the special lemon coffee (RMB28). Using beans from a plantation in Ethiopia, the light concoction has a distinct citrus zest and mild coffee flavor. It’s served cold and the barista adds in a few squeezes of lime, making this drink refreshing and perfect for summertime. There’s also a wide range of light and healthy cold teas made of fresh fruits (RMB18-28) like passion fruit and kumquat.
Cookies and cakes (RMB10-15) will also soon be available, procured from local vendors around town. Grab some snacks and a cuppa on your way to work (this spot opens at 8am) and you’ve just found another way to chill out during these boiling Shanghai months.
