Bitcoin – the first decentralized cryptocurrency –  was developed in 2008 by an unidentified programmer under the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates has praised this peer-to-peer digital payment system as a “technological tour de force” while former US Vice President Al Gore was once quoted as claiming to be “a big fan.”

Other prominent figures in the tech industry in the West went even further, describing bitcoin as ‘gold 2.0,’ saying that it will change the world. Halfway across the world, China is also at the forefront of the bitcoin phenomenon. In this issue’s cover story (p52), Noelle Mateer speaks to several major players who are embracing the bitcoin movement in Beijing and across the country.

As usual, October is another big month for music festivals and concerts. JZ Festival, the largest jazz festival in China, returns for the 12th time this year on October 15-16, with more than 40 international and local acts including Grammy Award winner Corinne Bailey Rae and Death in Vegas. JZ big boss Ren Yuqing speaks to our very own Andrew Chin just ahead of the big show on p38. He also gave us some exclusive snippets about the new JZ Club, which is scheduled to reopen at Datong Mill on October 14. That same night, Asia’s first Fashion Rocks concert is also happening; Usher, Charli XCX and Coco Lee are all scheduled to take over Shanghai Oriental Sports Center wearing costumes from some of the biggest fashion labels. On p40, I speak to Coco Lee about her recent victory on the popular Chinese reality TV show, I Am A Singer 4, and about her favorite language to sing in.

Chi Fan for Charity returns on November 12, and Betty Richardson speaks to the chefs from some of the participating restaurants for a preview of their menus that night (p68). In Life & Style, jewelry designer Angie Wu talks about founding her own brand here in Shanghai (p20) while Sheila Seiler travels to Mysore (p30) to soak up the sights, tastes and scents of this colorful southern Indian city.

Until next month.
