After a fantastic first full season paying tribute to everyone from Stevie Wonder to country, Encore Live is back at the Mixing Room with an all-star collection of Shanghai based musicians. This show pays tribute to the history of hip hop from its creation in the streets of 1970s New York to its ubiquity today. For more, check out our 2015 feature on Encore Live.

Celebrate the sounds of all the world in Xintiandi and The Hub during the Golden Week Holiday. Famed world musicians like Tuva’s Alash, Indian sitar player Purbayan, six-time Emmy Award winner Mirian Mendez, Raga Ragini Gulaza and many more will perform at this multicultural world music carnival.

No show is shrouded in more mystery this month than the pop star’s upcoming mainland stadium tour. While songs like ‘Tik Tok’ and ‘Die Young’ catapulted her to fame, Kesha has been on a relentless mission to redefine herself artistically. A nasty lawsuit against her former producer and label boss Dr. Luke for sexual assault has slowed down any new releases, but Kesha has spent the summer on her ‘Fuck the World’ tour where she’s been indulging in her true love of classic and psychedelic rock performing “songs you’ve never heard me play before and I may never play again.”

Oct 4-6: Simple Life

One of Taiwan’s most popular music festivals returns to Shanghai for the third straight year. Mandopop stars like Rene Liu and Cheer Chen will share the bill with stalwarts of the Mainland indie scene like Nova Heart (pictured above), Omnipotent Youth Society and Sound Toy. In previous years, international headliners like Television, UB40 and Macy Gray were announced closer to the festival date, although last year’s attempts to bring in Lauryn Hill and Rufus Wainright were scuttled by last minute visa issues. The Finnish melodic progressive metal masters rocks MAO Livehouse while still soaking in the adulation to their last disc, Under the Red Clouds.

Oct 6: Scott Henderson Trio

The South Miami guitarist mixes the classic rock styles of Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck with the freewheeling jazz sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Named the number one jazz guitarist by Guitar World, he’s bringing his ace trio to On Stage to celebrate last year’s Vibe Station – which some have dubbed his masterpiece.

Oct 7: Nightwish

The Finnish symphonic metal giants are their country’s most successful musical export with over 8 million records sold. They’ve topped the charts at home five times while scoring a global breakthrough with their hit song ‘Wish I Had An Angel.’ They’re back at Q.S.W. to appease their rabid fanbase, a mere six months after their last Shanghai show.

Hot Lips Live Jazz Night

Every Wednesday to Saturday, Nana Lee and keyboardist/pianist OJ play smooth jazz at 1515 West Bar, complementing mixologist Macarena Rotger’s new cocktail menu.

Xie Chunhua
The singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist brings his urban folk sounds to Yuyintang in celebration of his debut full length, Count.

Aesthesys
The Moscow instrumental group is known for mixing post-rock with ambient and neoclassical influences for an epic sound that really shines live.

JZ Pop-Up
With their new club set to open on October 14, JZ Club takes over The Market first for a jazz pop-up. Tickets include drinks and starters.

Noukilla
Shanghai’s top seggae-fusion band takes over The Pearl once again, bringing their chops and presence that have made them one of the city’s most consistently top live acts. Expect sunny sounds of Mauritius with DJ Skinny Brown supporting with a global bass set. Two dancers will also lead the crowd through sega dance lessons. Dress code: green, black and red.

Coldburn
The German hardcore act has toured with the likes of Brutality Will Prevail and Born From Pain. Last year, they released the heavy disc, Down in the Dumps.

MAO Livehouse Shanghai 7th Anniversary Party
To celebrate their seventh birthday, MAO Livehouse takes on a ‘Seven Year Itch.’ There will be an LED screen for people to leave some words of appreciation to the livehouse, which has been home to numerous fantastic gigs including last night’s incredible show by anderson.paak. Expect sets from local faves with attendees who pre-order receiving a gift.

Shanghai Sexy Rock Night
Harley’s welcomes three of Shanghai’s hardest working acts - Dirty Fingers, The Psyders and Dahlia Rosea for an eclectic but rocking party.

Devilish Impressions
For over 15 years, the Polish black metal act has always been one step ahead of the curve mixing brutal riffs with an avant-garde attitude.

Adept
The Swedish metal-core giants have won wide acclaim for mixing classics 80s hardcore with newer proggier sounds. While albums like Another Year of Disaster have been acclaimed, its their powerful live show that Adept really shines.

Game Over
Inferno welcomes the thrash masters who has rocked major stages from the Headbangers Open Air Festial to the True Thrash Fest in Osaka.

Sailor Suit and Double Pony Tail
Cosplay it up at this costume rock dance party featuring performances by Da Fresh, Jazzlipper and Runaway Snail.

Napoleon
The British avant-garde metal act bring their seven-city China tour to Yuyintang. Their debut disc, Mind Newborn was released in May and received a five star rating from Kerrang!

Zhu Qiao
The troubador has been nominated for Chinese Music Media Awards and is touring the nation for his second solo disc, New Day.

Sacred Rock
China rock veteran Feng Yasheng has charted in the Top 3 of the QQ Music Rock Charts while teaming with ‘Mr. MIDI’ Lu Jun on the EP Return of the King. Her rock project takes over Harley’s Underground as part of the Return of the King national tour.

Chen Chen
The folk favorite brings his national tour to Yuyintang to celebrate his latest EP, Who.
