Mr. Nice Cafe

Taking over an address that once housed a short-lived butcher shop, an entrepreneurial New Zealander has opened up Mr. Nice Cafe offering a comfortably chic atmosphere and homemade desserts.

Most afternoons find the two-story spot buzzing with groups of girls obsessively posting snapshots of Napoleons (RMB42) onto Dianping. The tasty treat is, admittedly, very photogenic. Piled four layers high with crimson strawberries cradled in swaths of thick cream, the only downside is that one must first have a plan of attack; the camera-friendly megalith proves impossible to eat gracefully, though the rewards are great when the tower tumbles down. Other desserts ?assembled in the open pastry kitchen - also prove tempting, from a darkly seductive tiramisu (RMB42) soaked in Marsala wine to a cheerful apple in puff pastry (RMB32). Shadowy cups of long black coffee (RMB28) have a slightly overdrawn quality, but pair well with the indulgences.

For those with no sweet tooth, an eclectic handful of savory offerings ?including a flavorful, if over-wet, tabouleh (RMB42)- also hit the spot. During weekdays, there’s a rotating list of set lunch specials (RMB58/soup and main; RMB68/soup, main and drink), but peak hours find it hard to snag a space in this sleek, popular spot.
