Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty

Knighted earlier this year for his excellent contribution to dance, Sir Matthew Bourne returns to Shanghai Culture Square where he packed the house last year with his legendary all-male adaptation of Swan Lake. This time, he’s given the classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, a striking gothic makeover. Purchase tickets here through our friends GoPiao. The Japanese metalcore favorites have shredded stages across the world as part of the Warped Tour and with tours with Machine Head and The Used. Expect a heavy set at MAO Livehouse.

Aug 17: Sunflower Bean

Aug 17: Sunflower Bean

This Brooklyn band is going against the indie dream-pop tide of their hometown reveling in old-fashioned heavy rock shenanigans. Praised by Rolling Stone and NME, the young group has scored with early hits like ‘Tame Impala.’ Opening is homegrown buzz band Dream Can, who recently signed a deal with Maybe Mars. Aug 17-19: A-TA-KA!

Taking cues from the magical surrealism of Salvador Dalí, Spanish theater company Cal y Canto has created a wondrous street theatre show where fantastic animals swarm in the air over the heads of the audience. Suitable for all ages.

Aug 18: World of Beer Grand Opening

World of Beer Grand Opening

The Florida chain beer shop and restaurant has entered Shanghai, opening its first location on Fumin and Julu Lu. Grand opening pry includes two complementary draft beers until 8pm, a performance from local rockers Rock Suey and a raffle for prizes like a years worth of bottomless booze brunches.

Aug 18: New Mash Beer

Kerry Hotel Pudong hosts the launch of this new MASH craft beer collaboration with Sumerian. The Mash Collaboration Sumerian Coffee IPA is a mix of freshly roasted coffee and hops, a full-flavored and bold brew with 6 percent alcohol content. One hour of free beer from 6-7pm.

The Yeti crew take over Jing An Kerry Centre for a mix of live mural art and music. DMC China champion DJ Wordy spins while the renowned Jayson Atienza pints a mural. Yeti DJs and Allan Marshall support while Vice’s Brandon Tucs does live murals. As always, expect a mix of food and drink pop-up vendors adding to the community vibe.

The Chengdu based rhymer has been bubbling in the Mainland’s hip hop underground for a couple years. He’s bursting into the spotlight thanks to his excellent new disc, 27: The Code of Lucifer and an expansive national tour that takes him to On Stage.

Aug 19: Lip Sync Battle

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has revived interest in the long-running art of pretending to sing. The Pearl has organized this competition to see which faux-singer is the best in Shanghai. As always, performance is key to a riveting lip-sync show with eight competitors dueling to win the crowd’s approval (and the RMB1,000 prize). SHFT introduces this new festival headlined by producer to the stars Cashmere Cat (Kanye, Ariana Grande) and deadmau5’s newest prodigy Rezz. Aug 19: Ferry Corsten

M2 welcomes the Dutch electronic music superstar that has scored worldwide clubbing hits for two decades from groundbreaking trance anthems to more recent forays into progressive house. Always an innovator, he recently revived his legendary Gouryella project with Tiësto with a goal of converting it to a full stage live show. While the tour will tour festivals across Europe, Corsten will be stopping by M2 to dip into his extensive discography of classics.

Aug 19-20: Dwayne Perkins

The Brooklyn comic has wowed on Conan, starred in recurring vignettes on The Tonight Show and is finishing up an indie comedy-horror film where he stars as a comic who has four jokes to make his captors laugh or die trying. He returns to Shanghai after wowing last summer at Kung Fu Komedy Club. For more, check out our interview with Dwayne Perkins.

Aug 20: National Theatre Live

Aug 6-27: National Theatre Live

This initiative to bring the finest in West End Theatre around the world has been a hit, including in Shanghai where shows routinely sell out. Each show is carefully filmed in front of a live audience before being screened in theaters globally. This month features Frankensteindirected by Slumdong Millionaire’s Danny Boyle and starring Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Trainspotting’s Jonny Lee Miller.

STD presents a summertime block party featuring some friends from the ever-hip UK label. Stalwarts Kingdom, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 (pictured above) take over Arkham. Aug 20: Huun Huur Tu

Since emerging from the Mongolia-Russian border republic of Tuva over two decades ago, this group has cultivated a global following. Their mix of native sounds like throat singing and instruments like the khomus (Tuvan jaw harp) with Western sounds from rock to electronic music have led to collaborations with music legends (and fans) like Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder and Ravi Shankar.

Yuyintang gets ear-bleedingly loud for the third edition, bringing together some of East Asia’s finest shoegaze acts. Japanese bands Kill My 27, Yukino Chaos and Broken Little Sister are joined by standout Xiamen group The White Tulips, the newly expanding Shaoxiang favorites City Flanker and rising hometown heroes Soft.

Painter Joan Miró’s colorful imagination comes to life in this kids-friendly dance show from Spain’s Arscaladanza Dance Combany. Choreographer Enrique Cabrera adds movements to the colorful images that defined Miró’s world. Appropriate for kids aged three and up.
