APRICOTS
With high levels of vitamin C and B17, these sweet, tart fruits (xingzi 杏子 - pictured above) can be helpful in combating cancers and aging. The rich, sunset-colored morsels come with smooth or velvety skins and have firm, not very juicy flesh. Cultivated in China more than 4,000 years ago, they are found today mostly in provinces like Hebei, Shandong and Xinjiang. Once dried, both fruit and seeds are popular snacks. Select ones with unblemished, warmly colored skin. Average price: RMB2/jin.
LUFFA
Also known as a towel gourd, luffa (sigua 丝瓜) is a refreshing addition to the summer dinner table. While the fibrous veggie can be used as a bath or kitchen sponge when matured and dried, the young green ones are rich in vitamin C, B1, fiber and iron. Cultivated around the country, it is usually peeled and chopped up to be served in a tasty stir-fry or egg soup. Choose plump, tender ones with light skin. Average price: RMB1.5/jin.
