These 10-minute lectures emphasizes communicating a message to a large audience concisely and with increasing excitement about the world of ideas and possibilities. Speakers Mr. Julian Thomas (Master, Wellington College), Mr. Ruiming Ni (Master of Shanghai Pudong High School) and Mr. Gerard MacMahon (Master of Wellington College International Shanghai) will be given one central idea to play around with in the inaugural edition of the WellingTEN lecture series.

Apr 15: Shanghai SIPG vs Melbourne Victory

It's been a busy month for Shanghai SIPG. While they're off to a slightly dissapointing start to the China Super League, including a draw against hometown rivals Shanghai Shenhua, they have recorded three victories in the AFC Champions League. They'll battle Melbourne on Tuesday in their one reamining AFC Champions League group stage home game, needing just a point to qualify. In the Chinese Super League they take on Yanbian Funde (Apr 29). Across town at Hongkou Football Stadium, Shanghai Shenhua hosts Hebei CFF (Apr 24).

Apr 19: Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall

Spike Lee’s documentary examines Michael Jackson’s transition from child star to the potent artist behind the classic Off the Wall. Released last year to great acclaim, it’s the latest in Grumpy Pig’s intimate film screenings with space limited to 35 people. Film starts at 9.30pm.

Following last month’s successful Loire Valley event, Les Naturalles gives love to Burgundy. Root Cellar will introduce some of their finest wines from the region starting at 7pm for a tasting, followed by a sumptuous dinner at Franck.

 Apr 20-29: Dangerous Liaisons

After thrilling families with their adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, Theatre Anon tackles another classic. However, this show is for the adults with Aaran Hawkins and Natasha Portwood starring as the aristocractic Sebastian and Isabelle, who attempt to seduce the virginal Cecile (Crystal Chu) in a fit of revenge. While the show is based on Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel, this production takes place in modern Shanghai. For more, check out our feature on Dangerous Liaisons.

Apr 21-22: NIGHTSHFT Festival Pre-parties (Troyboi)

The SHFT crew are throwing a massive warehouse party next month featuring OG Maco and UZ. To build up hype, they’re throwing pre-parties including the return of acclaimed Toronto producer GrandTheft, who performs at LeBaron on Thursday. The next night, Arkham hosts rising London producer Troyboi, who has remixed ILoveMakonnen and have collaborated with Flosstradamus and Diplo (who is headlining next month’s MYTH Festival).

Apr 21-24: The 39 Steps

New York actress Amy Kersten (Venus in Furs) returns to Shanghai in Urban Aphrodite's production of Patrick Barlow's hit comedic take on the Hitchock classic. Kersten will be one of the four actors tasked with bringing the entire 1935 spy classic to life in this show of big accents and bigger physical comedy. Apr 21-May 8: Going to Baidi

Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center hosts this intriguing original bilingual production. With dialogue in English and Chinese, Going to Baidi brings together three actresses from China (Sun Ningfang), USA (Awesta Zarif - Fight Club, The Learned Ladies) and Ghana (Rebecca Etebopinil - International Performance Studio). The show follows a woman in extreme poverty who must make a life-changing decision that threatens her dream - going to Baidi.

Apr 22: The Huntsman: Winter’s War

This sequel to the 2012 hit Snow White and the Huntsman ditches Snow White for a new adventure focusing on Chris Hemsworth’s returning Eric the Huntsman. However, Charlize Theron’s evil queen looms from her past terrors against her younger sister (Emily Blunt) and an ingenious plot to make her return after death. In theaters nationwide on April 22.

21 years ago, this surf-rock group took part in a televised battle of bands. Although they didn’t win, it was the start of an awesome career that’s seen the group a mass amount of fans while performing with legends like Dick Dale, ‘the king of surf guitar.’ The Psyders and Round Eye support.

Apr 22: Lite

New Noise are bringing in the Japanese math rock giants for a five-city China tour. Known for their emotional compositions that mix edgy riffs with complex rhythms, Lite has worked with Tortoise’s John McEntire and have headlined their country’s massive Fuji Rock Festival.

Apr 22: Soulspeak

Revered for his funk-infused soulful hip-hop beats, Beijing producer Soulspeak introduces a darker side of his musical personality. His debut record as Kai Luen is full of dark soundscapes composed of field recordings of noisy China reshaped into apocalyptic grooves. The Hollow Ghost will be released on SVBKVLT with an album release party at the Shanghai label's affiliated club, The Shelter. Apr 22-23: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Shanghai Grand Theatre’s yearlong celebration of Shakespeare continues with the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève's wholly original take of the Bard's romantic comedy classic, where the playwright himself is caught in the crosshairs of a fairy dispute. This talk will explore the issue while discussing how mapping tools, measurement programs and the sounds of nature can have a huge impact in improving this issue.
