The French electro house icon managed
Daft Punk into superstardom, collaborated with Phoenix on their debut
disc, started and oversees the iconic Ed Banger Records which has given
the likes of Justice their big break. Despite the busy schedule, he managed to chat with us before his Feb 18 show at Le Baron.
Is this your first time in Shanghai?
It’s my second time in Shanghai. I came for a huge dance festival in 2014, which was crazy! Shanghai looks like a never sleep city, so many people with lots of energy. I’m very happy to come back.
What’s your favorite Chinese food?
CHOP SUEY of course! I even made a song about it! (smiles)
On your latest EP Gypsy Life, each song is a different male name. What’s the story behind that?
I made this for a skateboard video, this is the soundtrack of a video for the french brand Cliché Skateboards Each track is dedicated to the skaters that change my life: ED Templeton, MARK Gonzales, MIKE Vallely and RAY Barbee.
What’s the craziest set you’ve ever played?
A heavy metal set on a giant boat with 5000 clubbers at Holy Ship last year!
You’ve been around the electronic music scene for awhile. Have all those late nights DJ’ing taken their toll?
Disco naps are the secret.
Who are the top artists currently on your playlist?
Fatima Yamaha, Boston Bun, Bicep and Adesse Versions are my club weapons at the moment. House music all night long.
Where do you see electronic music heading in the future?
We’ve been fighting for 20 years to make electronic music a real thing. Then it became about who is the most “underground” again. It became boring. It’s time to go back to real fun and dance all together. As Daft Punk used to say “Hip Hop, Jungle, Techno, House, no matter. It’s what the rhythm does.”
