The October issue of That's Shanghai is out now – paper-and-ink-form citywide, digital pdf-form right here or in your browser here.

In the famous think-piece ‘Federer as Religious Experience’ he wrote for the Play magazine section of the New York Times, the late David Foster Wallace described Roger Federer as “a creature whose body is both flesh and, somehow, light.” That was 2006.

Almost a decade later, the tennis maestro could be defined in almost the same way. The Swiss has a timelessness to his game that has defied expectations and the standards of the sport. When he plays, he still enchants. And if you ever wondered if he’s as nice as everyone says, well, yes, he is. We can confirm it. We spoke to him for this month's cover story ahead of his arrival in Shanghai for the Rolex Masters on October 11-18, and he couldn’t have been more down to earth about his formidable career. Turn to p56 to see what he told us.

Speaking of down-to-earth famous people, Angelica Cheung, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue China, also turned out to be a delight to chat to. I met her at her Beijing office earlier last month, and she was really quite cool – as only the head of the country’s most outrageously successful publication can be. Read about that on p24.

As for the rest of the issue, Andrew Chin has done an excellent roundup of all the other sports events happening in town this month on p18, and talked to NBA MVP Stephen Curry about China’s love affair with the game on p15.

In the Arts section, you can find an excellent feature on the JZ Festival (also happening this month – October is like Shanghai’s hottest time of the year it seems), also by Chin (p42) plus arts, theater and dance to get your culture fix covered.

Our Food & Drink empress Betty Richardson has also outdone herself (and her liver?) with her main feature on p66, a ridiculously good-looking spread of some of the best cocktails in town – and the geniuses behind them. If drink porn wasn’t a thing, it might be now.

We also have a pretty packed Community section this month – check it out from p86 to read about social enterprises and Bubba’s imminent Chili Cook-Off.

It’s a hell of an issue, basically. Enjoy.

Marianna Cerini, Editor-in-Chief
