The August issue of That's Shanghai is out now – paper-and-ink-form citywide, digital pdf-form right here or in your browser here.

There's no rest for the wicked and this August we’ve covered all you need to know about the festival scene in the PRC. Starting on p.56, Andrew Chin chats with the founders of six major Chinese festivals, getting the breakdown on what it takes to secure hot lineups and draw thousands of people together to listen to live music.  He’s also put together a Shanghai concert guide (p62), so that you can keep track of the dozens of gigs and events that’ll grace our city in the coming months.

In the City section, Erik Crouch and our photographer Nicky Almasy visit Anhui (p14) to look for (and find), China’s version of the Egyptian Sphinx. And Louvre. And Chiang Kai-shek’s Presidential Palace. It’s mental stuff , we tell you. And definitely worth a weekend trip in between festivals.

Elsewhere in this issue, we tackle the confusing, booming world of beauty pageantries in China (p30), while Chin gets you the skinny of all the cultural happenings you should check out this month (p44). We’ve also got a great interview with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, courtesy of our Events Editor Zoey Zha (p46).

Betty Richardson has done her fair share too, bringing you the second part of her guide to Japanese dining in the city (p68). This month, she tries yakiniku, teppanyaki and more.  Be sure to sate your appetite before you crack open her pages, or expect a serious bout of hunger pang.

Now go put your dancing shoes on and get ready to boogie. It's festival season!
