A man in Haikou, Hainan province has been charged with attempted murder after he pushed his girlfriend into a manhole, where she was trapped for over 60 hours.
The suspect, surnamed Guo, was filmed by a surveillance camera removing the lid of the manhole and covering the opening with cardboard. Later, walking with his unfortunate victim, he pushes her violently into the hole, before covering it again with the metal lid.
The woman spent 60 hours in the three metre (9.8 feet) deep manhole before she was able to make a rope out of her clothes and climb to the opening. Too weak to move the metal lid completely, she waved hand through it and shouted until passersby saved her on December 15.
"I did not sleep at all the first night I fell in the manhole. I could see the darkness around me. I thought that I would not be choked to death if I looked up," she said.
The woman said she had lent Guo 100,000 yuan ($16,490) to help him repay gambling debts. According to police, Guo confessed to trying to kill the woman because she wanted him to repay the money.
