The largest super typhoon to hit Guangdong in years, Nida has prompted authorities to initiate an emergency response, raising alerts to red in both Shenzhen and Guangzhou. All citizens are advised to remain indoors for the next 24 hours.

To help you prepare for the storm, we’ve compiled the latest alerts and closings in both cities as of 6pm on August 1. All residents in the PRD should take precaution and keep an eye out for transportation delays and/or cancellations throughout the next two days.

Shenzhen

In Shenzhen, a red typhoon alert has been issued until noon tomorrow. The typhoon is expected to create a storm surge height of 100-180 centimeters along the Shenzhen coast. All residents, and especially those near the shore, should prepare for possible flooding.

A red alert warning for waves has also been issued for all marine operations, as strong winds are predicted to bring 4- to 6-meter-high whitecaps between noon today and tomorrow. All ferries to and from Shekou have been suspended until further notice.

A staff member at the Shekou Ferry Terminal told That’s the status of tomorrow’s ferries would be announced tonight on the port’s official WeChat account: szzgky2013.

Guangzhou

At 2pm today, the Guangzhou Municipal Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters launched the city’s first Level I anti-typhoon and flood control emergency response in history, calling for all offices, factories and schools to close immediately, effective for the next 24 hours.

The announcement states:

Typhoon Nida will seriously affect the city, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surges. Other than rescue personnel, everyone should avoid going outdoors.

All Pearl River cruises, water buses and ferry services in Guangzhou have been suspended until further notice.

The United Family Guangzhou Clinic has also reported it will close tomorrow morning, August 2, but urgent care service will still be available.

Dozens of flights were cancelled in Hong Kong today, with more delays and cancellations expected in airports across southern China in the next two days.
