From closed restaurants to empty cubicles, National Day in Beijing can be a lonely place. This seven-day holiday, nicknamed “Golden Week,” is the second longest vacation that many Chinese people have off during the entire year. As such, hordes of people travel from the city to their home provinces (an estimated one in three people in Beijing are not from the actual city) Conversely a heck of a lot of folk arrive in Beijing with mounds of luggage and a desire to tour the Forbidden City. While your friends return to their hometowns, here's how to keep your spirits up and, hey, even enjoy some of mandatory me-time. See you on the otherside...

2014 Hong Kong Cinema

BC MOMA plays host the Hong Kong Film Festival this Monday, showcasing a series of, you guessed it, Hong Kong films that stress the relationship between writing and film. During the late 1870s the island's producers developed a taste for literary adaptation, and directors such as Hark Tsui, Ann Hui, Ho Yim, and many more started adapting popular literary works to sometimes even-more popular films. Watch these and more at this year's 2014 Hong Kong Film Festival.
