All the US-China hullaballoo in the world can’t stop a recent trend in Beijing’s culinary scene. From last year’s opening of The Cheesecake Factory to the In-N-Out pop-up this spring, America’s favorite chain restaurants are quickly appearing in the capital. The most recent landing is a popular chain known for their succulent biscuits: Red Lobster, y’all.
Walking in, we’re instantly smacked with Americana. Greeted by a friendly and charming host, we’re directed to a table where another waiter is smiling and ready to answer all of our pressing questions. (Mainly, what did we do to deserve this shiny new Red Lobster?)
Red Lobster is, of course, known for its lobster, so unsurprisingly the menu is very seafood-heavy. We spot a surf-and-turf option, but let’s face it: why distract ourselves with anything else? We go straight for the gold with an order of glorious lobster-stuffed avocado with shrimp in a creamy mayonnaise mix (RMB78). Next up, chili-fried lobster with cashew nuts (RMB308), packed with a crunchy kick of spice.
Third up to bat: lobster tacos (RMB98). This dish alone could feed two, as it’s a pair of huge tacos, overloaded with tasty fixings and served with a side of well-seasoned fries. These leave us a bit divided – sure, they are a funky twist on a lobster roll (not to mention, a bit healthier), but lack a bolder punch of flavor.
Heading into the homestretch, we indulge in a serving of cheesecake – ah, just the creamy digestif that our stomachs needed.
For those homesick for a taste of stars and stripes, the world is your oyster (well, lobster) at the new Red Lobster.
Oh, and the Cheddar Bay biscuits? Unlimited and damn good. We couldn’t keep, er, our claws off of them.
