A Beijing man who fired a double-barrelled shotgun in the air to scare away a group of people dancing by his house was charged Tuesday with illegal possession of firearms.

The suspect, surnamed Shi, was reportedly irritated by the loud music played by dancers in a square near his house in the city's Changping district. Shi, who was intoxicated at the time (shocker), fired several times in the air with his shotgun to scare away the dancing hooligans.

Speaking to the Global Times, Shi's lawyer said his client had "endured the noise for a long time" and did not mean to scare the dancers by shooting the gun from his courtyard. Perhaps he was just trying to provide them a backing beat.

Shi's case attracted a surprising amount of sympathy online, with many commenters sharing similar stories about the menace that is middle-aged and elderly people ballroom dancing to Lady Gaga in the country's streets.

Speaking to the Beijing Youth Daily, one resident of the capital said he had complained to a group of dancers near his home multiple times but was ignored.

A group of dancing grannies in Wuhan, Hubei province even had poop thrown over them by local residents frustrated by the constant noise.
