Now in its sixth year, the Beijing International Film Festival is trying its best to make a name for itself as the country's premier film festival. Last year, the event managed to attract A-listers such as action superstar (and ex-Governator) Arnold Schwarzenegger and American director Darren Aronofsky. It looks like next month's 2016 Beijing International Film Festival will be quite the event too. Even Natalie Portman is going to be there.
Actress Natalie Portman will be walking the red carpet on April 17, The Hollywood Reporter announced Wednesday. The Oscar-winner will also be screening her directorial debut film, A Tale of Love and Darkness. The film is based on Israeli author Amos Oz’s autobiographical novel. Portman is both starring in and directing the movie, which was performed entirely in Hebrew and shot in Jerusalem. The film first premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
This isn’t Portman’s first visit to China. She attended the Shanghai International Film Festival back in 2014 and has previously expressed interest in partnering up with Chinese filmmakers in the future.
The Beijing International Film Festival will run from April 16-23. Although not all attendees have been announced, we also expect to see renowned Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore. Tornatore will take part in a forum discussing the relationship between domestic and foreign films and the future of the Chinese film market.
During the week-long event there will be screenings of a number of movies all around the city, including the Alien Trilogy, The Lobster and The Big Short (Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay). There will also be a screening of a 3D remake of Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987).
Tickets go on sale starting April 9 and will be available online at Gewara and Weipiao. Further announcements for festival events and attendees are expected to be revealed throughout the upcoming weeks.
