The 29th Month of La Francophonie in South China officially opened on March 8 at Guangzhou Opera House, marking the start of a month-long cultural celebration under the theme 'La francophonie au féminin' (Francophonie in the Feminine).

Renowned musician Laure Shang has been named the 2025 ambassador for the event, which highlights the role of women in Francophone culture and invites the public to explore their personal connections with the French language.

With more than 320 million French speakers across 93 countries and regions, including 29 where French is an official language, the Month of La Francophonie is a global tribute to the richness and diversity of the Francophone world.

This year’s edition holds special significance as 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, a milestone highlighted by French Consul General in Guangzhou Sylvain Fourrière during the opening ceremony.

Looking ahead to 2025, France will continue to welcome global audiences, hosting the United Nations Ocean Conference in June and the World Badminton Championships in August, where the presence of the Chinese delegation is expected to play a crucial role.

During the ceremony, Sylvain Fourrière awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of Arts and Letters) to Chen Rui, Deputy General Manager of Guangzhou Opera House, in recognition of her contributions to cultural exchange and Sino-French relations.

A graduate of Sun Yat-sen University’s French department with two years of study in France, Chen Rui has been instrumental in bringing top-tier French artistic performances to Guangzhou, bridging cultures through the performing arts.

Throughout March, cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu will host a variety of French-language events, all open to the public. Among the highlights, B-girl Camille Regneault from YEAH Yellow dance crew will bring an electrifying breakdance performance to Guangzhou.

Coinciding with the launch of the Women in Arts Festival at Guangzhou Opera House, young performers staged 'La vie en rose du petit prince,' adding a poetic touch to the evening’s celebrations.
