For frequent travelers between Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen, the convenience of the Guangzhou East Station to Shenzhen Bao’an Airport intercity route was unmatched.
Launched in 2019, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway stopped at Dongguan West Station before reaching Shenzhen Bao’an Airport, providing seamless access to one of China’s busiest airports.
However, as of June 15, the route has been altered, and trains no longer depart from Guangzhou East Station, instead starting from the newly added Xintang South Station.
An official announcement confirmed that, starting September 1, the route would be operated by a subsidiary of Shenzhen Metro Group.
As of now, however, the route remains unchanged and still departs from Xintang South Station.
So, what are your options if you need to travel between Guangzhou and Shenzhen Bao’an Airport, or if you’re coming from the Shenzhen Bao’an Airport to Guangzhou’s city center?

Alternatively, travelers can opt for ride-hailing services such as Didi to get to Shenzhen Airport, which costs approximately RMB270, plus an additional RMB47 for highway tolls.
Since the route adjustment, the practicality of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway has significantly decreased, with operational challenges continuing to mount.
Recent reports reveal that the intercity railways in the Greater Bay Area are public utilities operating under heavy financial strain, largely due to high depreciation and interest expenses.
These costs accounted for approximately 73% of the overall losses in recent years.
