Here are all the major international movies to catch in Chinese theaters this September.*
September 6: Free Solo
Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo hits Chinese theaters this month. It follows the daunting and awe-inspiring effort by rock climber Alex Honnold to become the first person to ever free solo climb El Capitan. The film is an interesting insight into the mindset of one of the world’s elite climbers, and features beautiful shots of Yosemite National Park in California.

This bizarre sequel carries on the plot of prequel Endhiran. Eight years after human-robot Chitti is dismantled for causing untold amounts of destruction, scientist Dr. Vaseegaran creates a brand new robot and assistant, Nila. However, the continuous disappearance of cell phones in the city seems to predict incoming chaos. These strange incidents call for the return of Chitti to save the city.
September 6: A Dog’s Tale

Based on a true story, A Dog’s Tale follows the story of a dog named Ding Dang who gets separated from its owner. Sure to pluck at the heartstrings of dog lovers around the country, watch as Ding Dang, a rescue dog, escapes from his new home to look for his old owner, a firefighter named Yang Qi who was forced to retire after an injury.
September 6: Cold Pursuit
This action thriller stars Liam Neeson as man who seeks revenge for the murder of his son. Neeson plays Nels, a quiet family man and star citizen of a glitzy resort town who becomes an unlikely hero as he kills members of a drug cartel for killing his son. The film was embroiled in controversy earlier this year, when Neeson was accused of making racist comments during the press junket for the film.
September 6: The Longest Shot

In the midst of the darkness and blood that lie beneath a prosperous metropolis, Lao Zhao is an unfailing hitman faced with two last jobs before retirement. Both are at the same time, same place, and both clients are each other’s target. Zhao battles guilt and duty as he embarks on these last two tasks.
September 6: Killing for the Prosecution

In Tokyo, a young public prosecutor named Keiichiro Okino is assigned to a department handling violent cases. When an old money lender is killed, Shigeo Matsukura, previously convicted in a murder case of a schoolgirl, is framed as the prime suspect. September 12: The Whistleblower

Not long after, a plane carrying classified documents crashes in Mount Everest’s ‘death zone’ – threatening the hard-won peace. But no one knows what truly awaits them atop the world’s tallest mountain...
September 12: AKA: Chairman Mao 1949
Taking place in Xiangshan Park in Beijing’s Haidian district, this historical film paints a picture of the first generation of the central leadership of the People’s Republic of China under Mao Zedong. The film comes as the nation gears up for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC.
September 13: Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire

The ever-popular Detective Conan series comes to Chinese cinemas, with its most successful iteration, this month. That’s impressive, considering that this is the 23rd film in the Japanese series. This time around Conan sets out to stop the robbery of a precious blue sapphire, which is set to take place in Singapore. With murder and more than a little intrigue involved, Conan is in for a wild ride.
September 20: Friend Zone

This saccharine romantic comedy comes via Thailand this month. Taking the tried and true concept of the ‘friend zone’ to task, this film follows a pair of childhood pals, Palm and Gink, as they voyage through their early adult life as almost lovers. A story of missed opportunities, romantic anticipation and gut-wrenching heartbreak, bring your best gal or guy to the movies and thank your lucky stars that you’re more than just friends.
September 20: Little Q

Xiao Q, a smart, intelligent guide dog becomes the companion of a blind, lonely and grumpy pastry chef, Li Baoting. Xiao Q becomes a member of the family, bolstering them at their low points, until one day, Baoting falls and Xiao Q faces their inevitable separation.
September 20: Mia and the White Lion

A young girl moves with her family from London to the wild of South Africa and befriends a lion cub. Over the course of three years, the pair forge an unlikely bond, which is eventually threatened when her father agrees to sell the lion to trophy hunters. In order to save her feline friend, Mia attempts to help him escape.
September 30: The Climbers

The year is 1960, and four Chinese climbers are attempting to reach the top of the daunting Mount Everest. It is their fifth attempt at the most difficult route on the mountain, the North Slope. The young climbers embark on the impossible mission and are forced to face the grim reality of life and death.
