We Ate Lemon Snickers So You Don't Have To

'We Try It' is a regular series where we try the latest off-beat food and beverage offerings.

Lemon is one of those fruity flavors that tend to match up well with just about anything – Lemon cake, lemonade, lemon ice-cream and popsicles... you name it. The question is not what lemon goes well with, but rather what doesn’t it go well with. It appears that we have found the answer to that question folks: Snickers. Lemon doesn’t go well with Snickers.

The Snickers brand was actually named after the favorite horse of the Mars family, who founded the company that makes the saccharine chocolate bar. And like a old workhorse being flogged mercilessly, the candy company has gone through some interesting China-based iterations as of late, introducing chili-flavored bars, and now these citrusy wonders.

We stumbled across this terrifying new flavor of one of the world’s favorite peanut and caramel chocolate bars and were immediately attracted to the blue wrapper, which made it look refreshing and juicy, like an ice-cold drink on a sweltering day. Perfect for summer, right?

Below, four That’s staffers share their thoughts on the lemon-flavored Snickers and provide a rating from one to five.

Rating: 2/5

“Basically like a normal Snickers with the occasional hint of (artificial) lemon coming through the sugary white chocolate. Underwhelming. And too sweet. I'll stick with the traditional milk chocolate snickers, thank you kindly.”

Cristina Ng

Rating: 0/5

“This was hate at first bite, and then it got worse. The overly sweet white chocolate shell has a lemon-like flavor best compared to dish soap. The caramel and nut filling is the same as the normal, better Snickers but it doesn’t save the day.”

Rating: 3/5

“I've tried worse but the textures are all wrong here. The outer chocolate coating has the consistency of crayon and doesn't work well with the nutty, caramel innards. There is also a strange, sharp aftertaste that is reminiscent of sea salt lemonade. Not entirely inedible though. If you’re famished and hankering for something with a bit of crunch, this lemon snickers will hit the spot.”

Bridget O’Donnell

Department: Digital
Rating: 2/5

“It tastes far more sugary than a normal snickers, and the lemon flavor feels very artificial. The lemon is so overpowering after the first bite that you can no longer really taste it during the next few bites.”

The final verdict (an average of all four ratings provided above): 1.75/5
