At 8.39am on Tuesday, March 12 a car in Nanshan District collided with five pedestrians on Xili Lu outside of Shenzhen Polytechnic West Campus killing one person and injuring four people. While footage of the incident initially led netizens to believe that the accident was intentional on the part of the driver, Shenzhen Traffic Police released a statement through their Weibo account yesterday evening stating that the accident was caused by a car malfunction.

The driver of the car, a 42-year-old male named Li Moshu, was tested to see if he had alcohol in his system after the incident, with results found to be negative. While details of how the car malfunctioned have yet to be revealed, police are currently following up on the case.

Footage of the incident began to circulate on Weibo on the afternoon of Thursday, March 14. The video shows the SUV first approach a gate of the university's West Campus before coming to a halt for at least 10 seconds. The SUV then accelerates forward, driving onto the footpath and hitting two pedestrians, a man and a woman. The car continues careening forward for around 500 meters, hitting three more pedestrians before crashing into a wall and coming to a halt.

All five wounded were transported to Shenzhen Xili People’s Hospital where they received treatment, with one person later pronounced dead.
