Deputy Secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee Li Huanan, who is suspected of having ‘seriously violated’ party rules, is now under investigation, according to a party notification released last Tuesday.
Li is yet another high-ranking official who has abruptly come under investigation by the CPC’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Ironically, just one day prior to the notification, on October 8, when he was inspecting the work of a ‘grass-root level party building’ in Shenzhen’s Luohu District, he instructed that “efforts should be stepped up to strengthen the education and training of Party members and cadres so as to enhance their political competence and job performance.”
Li joined the Communist Party in 1983 and, between the years of 1984 and 2018, has held various high-ranking government and party positions in Anhui and Guangdong. At present there are no specific details as to what rules Li has violated.
It’s interesting to note that an ‘Ousted at the Age of 59’ phrase has been coined since China launched its nationwide battle against corruption. Li himself is 59 years old, although it is unclear whether his case is corruption related.
The phenomenon came into focus after a series of officials were convicted of corruption at the age of 59, including Liang Guohua, former Deputy Secretary of the CPC Leading Group of Heyuan Municipality, who came under investigation in June this year.
The Paper reported on Friday that former Deputy Secretary Liang Guohua was removed from his position and had his party membership revoked. Liang was the subject of a disciplinary review which found that he was in breach of multiple serious violations of the law, including violating party discipline, integrity discipline and life discipline.
