The Hong Kong Observatory issued a warning this afternoon that Tropical Storm Son-Tinh will move westwards today across the South China Sea, rapidly approaching Hainan and Guangdong’s Leizhou Peninsula.

As of 2pm today, Tropical Storm Son-Tinh was estimated to be about 360 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong. The city’s observatory predicted that it would pass as close as 300 kilometers to the south of Hong Kong sometime tonight.

The State Oceanic Administration (PRC) predicts that from July 17-18, the storm will cause waves as high as 4.5 meters in northern areas of the South China Sea, and that the western coast of the province will receive 50-100 centimeters of rainfall.

According to a government bulletin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan and Shanwei have issued white typhoon warning signals, indicating that a tropical cyclone is predicted to affect an area in the next 48 hours. Zhuhai, Yangjiang, Maoming and Zhanjiang have issued blue typhoon warnings, signaling that strong winds are expected in the next 24 hours.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline in affected areas.
