What do fundraisers across the world, a hair-themed clothing brand and Shenzhen’s swanky Barber Shop bar have in common?
Freddy's mustache.
It's a tuft of hair 12 years in the making that prompted Hong Kong businesses to ask him to model – until 2013, when Freddy, who asked not to be identified by last name, decided to give it the chop.
“I decided to shave off my mustache for the first time in my life,” Freddy says, describing the early November shave that kicks off participation in social movement Movember.
To take part, men grow a mustache over November in order to bring attention to men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide. Mix in more than USD700 million raised by the Movember foundation in fundraisers across the globe and you have a bona fide platform to support men's health.
Freddy now runs ‘mustache friendly’ clothing brand M-Stash and has taken to organizing Movember charity events across Shenzhen, essentially become the city’s patron saint of upper lip hair.
“In Shenzhen some years ago, nobody knew about Movember,” says Freddy. “Now we have a month full of events.”
One of them falls on Friday: the Mid-Mo Party will be held in Shark Futian Friday, November 17. See the gents of Shenzhen fuzzy lipped while enjoying casino games, a DJ with live vocals, a best dressed concert and a lucky draw.
Moreover, two other Movember themed parties are in the works, including a party on the 24th and a Mo-down event on December 1, where the razors will come out and the men will leave clean lipped.
Stay tuned for exact times and venues.
Nov 17, 10pm; free entry. Shark Futian. See event listing.
