Public transportation coverage in Shenzhen has expanded with the opening of a tramline this past weekend, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Journeying along three routes totaling 11.7 kilometers, the tram was finally opened after trials in March and June.

The tram will service 20 stops across Longhua District and has a capacity of 350 passengers. The three routes are Qinghu to Xinlan (清湖–新澜), Qinghu to Xiawei (清湖–下围) and Xinlan to Xiawei (新澜–下围).

Similar to the subway, opening time is 6.30am-11pm daily. Fare is RMB2 a ride and paying is convenient, with Shenzhen Tong, WeChat and Alipay all accepted.

This new form of transport is also environmentally friendly, releasing exactly zero emissions.

That's thanks to the fact that the tram runs on electricity: each time it docks at a station, it automatically recharges itself for 30 seconds while passengers climb aboard.
