Following a missing persons report three days prior, a 20-year-old student of Shenzhen University was found in a Hong Kong jail, reportedly locked up for theft.
The master’s degree hopeful, identified as Luo, hailed from Guizhou province and had recently graduated from the College of Information Engineering at Shenzhen University.
According to Oriental Daily, on Monday, July 31, Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court handed Luo a 14-day jail sentence after she was found guilty of three counts of theft.
The court determined that Luo stole cosmetic products from three different retail outlets, in Tuen Mun Town Plaza, Trend Plaza Shopping Arcade and Tuen Mun in the New Territories, with a value totaling HKD2,400 (RMB2,065).
The sticky-fingered mainlander traveled solo to Hong Kong on July 29, crossing the border at 1.23pm according to Shenzhen authorities.
By 5pm, her phone had been switched off and she was reported missing the same day after friends and family were unable to reach her.
On Monday, Luo's parents came from Guizhou to Shenzhen, where they contacted Shenzhen authorities and applied for two-way permits to Hong Kong in order to look for their daughter.
Meanwhile, Luo was being sentenced and sent to the slammer, to serve her sentence at Lo Wu Correctional Institute.
It is expected she will be released from custody on August 14.
