A mysterious dog-like creature has been spotted at Guiyuan Mountain near Jiangmen, in Guangdong province, spurring debate among netizens as to what the animal might be.

First spotted and photographed on July 5 by a man identified in reports as Mr. Li, the animal has white fur, small paws with thin claws and a pointed mouth.

In a report by Jiangmen Radio and Television, Mr. Li states that the creature – which he initially took for a stray dog – was wet, due to the rain, dirty and unkempt. He also added that the creature did not appear to be injured and, based on how close he got to it, isn’t particularly afraid of people.

It has been speculated that the animal could be an arctic fox, an animal more commonly associated with the frigid northern reaches of our planet than with sunny, subtropical Guangdong.

While it may be easy to scoff at this theory, it’s worth noting at least one other arctic fox has been spotted in Guangdong this year, being kept as a pet by security staff at the Guangdong University of Finance and Economics Sanshui campus in Guangzhou.

Admittedly, there is a resemblance:

The other suggestion being forwarded is that the animal might be a species of mink, possibly an escaped pet.

Some That’s readers have also pointed out the animal may be a species of possum, which, although not native to China, is alleged to have been introduced here.
