Around 11.30am on June 4, a man surnamed Wang and his family had just finished up a meal at a McDonald's in Longhua New District, Shenzhen, when they discovered two maggots on their trays. The staff member cleaning up their table also spotted one in what must have been a shared moment of horror.
"Everyone saw that maggot at almost the same time, it was still alive and wriggling on the food tray. Looking at it, I got goosebumps all over," Wang recounted.

He, his wife and child live near the McDonald's, which is located inside Hele Supermarket in the Mingle Laocun neighborhood. Although they'd arrived with two other families, because of the size of their party Wang's group had sat at a lone table on the side of an aisle.
At first Wang worried that the maggots had been inside the food. He asked McDonald's staff to take his group to the hospital for checkups, but they refused. While waiting for them to come around, lunchtime came and the employees gave Wang's family a free meal.
But when they sat down to eat, they once again discovered a couple of maggots crawling on their trays. Thinking that McDonald's wouldn't give them maggoty food twice in a row, Wang looked around for another source.
"Right under the table where we were eating, I found three maggots crawling on the ground."

Wang suspected they came from the ceiling, which reassured him somewhat: "...thinking that the maggots probably weren’t from the food we felt a lot better, because after all our children had eaten it." After making sure staff members would look into it, they left the store.
A Southern Metropolis Daily reporter visited the same McDonald's afterwards. Although business seemed to be going on as normal, he noted that the table where Wang's family had eaten now had a sign reading 'this table is broken, please do not sit here.'

A closer look at the ceiling above the table revealed four maggots of varying sizes trying to squirm out of a crevice. The longest was about a centimeter long, according to the reporter. Over the course of 10 minutes, three fell down from the ceiling.

Staff members said that the restaurant would deal with their pest problem soon, and would take precautions to make sure similar incidents won't happen again.
