Guangdong's Air Quality is Worse than Beijing's Today

People in the Pearl River Delta awoke this morning to a low haze across the region and one obvious question: pollution or fog?

If air quality measures are to be believed, this is some serious pollution.

IMG_5138-copy.JPGMeasures of fine particulate matter (PMI2.5) pushed the air quality index for Shenzhen up to 189 in Nanshan District as of 2pm, according to aqidb.org.

To put that in perspective, the US Embassy in Beijing is reporting an AQI of 156.

An AQI in the 151 to 200 range is considered unhealthy and can cause adverse health effects in the general pubic, with children and elderly more at risk.

Haze was also reported in Guangzhou and Foshan, where the AQI is hovering at 169 and 172 respectively as of 2.12pm.

While the Pearl River Delta has got it pretty rough today, this pales in comparison to the horrendous air quality Beijing experienced last week after a massive sandstorm.
