Here’s a tip: after a boozy night, don’t pass out in the street. Especially not near Coco Park where groups are apparently targeting sidewalk sleepers.
Futian police recently detained several men over a June 25 incident outside Coco Park that saw a sleeping, intoxicated 26-year-old robbed by two separate groups, according to the Shenzhen Evening News.
A man, identified as Liang, 26, went to sleep near Shopping Park subway station’s exit C on June 25 after 5.40am. Over about 45 minutes, two separate groups of men first stole Liang's iPhone 6S from his hands, and later RMB1000 from his wallet.
The man suspected of stealing the money had an apparent lookout help him as he went through Liang’s pockets, before taking RMB1000 and returning the wallet.
On August 5 at 3am the men suspected of stealing the money were spotted by a guard watching a surveillance monitor. Police came and apprehended the two men, 35 and 28.
On August 8, police at Gangxia arrested the 38-year-old suspected of taking Liang’s phone.
Police said that the suspects were either unemployed or worked as e-bike taxi drivers. Police said that because e-bike taxi drivers are often outside bars, they are the first to see people asleep on the street and sometimes take advantage of the situation.
All suspects have reportedly confessed.
