Starting on September 26, travelers in Shenzhen will be able to catch nonstop flights from Bao'an International Airport all the way to Seattle, Washington. The new route also includes a connection between Shenzhen and Xiamen, all courtesy of the local airline XiamenAir.
The move was announced last week when Seattle’s mayor, Ed Murray, made a visit to China to conduct 'business talks.' Evidently they went well for both sides. This will be XiamenAir’s first entry into the US market, and Seattle, home of cultural icons ranging from Starbucks to grunge music, isn’t a bad place to start.
XiamenAir, formerly Xiamen Airlines, boasts an all-Boeing fleet of more than 150 aircraft. According to the company’s website, it is or has been ranked as the “No 1 Airline in China for punctuality,” although whether they are also considered punctual by US standards remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, despite possible two-hour delays, Seattleites and others in the area have something to gain too: convenient access to all that Shenzhen and Xiamen have to offer in terms of food, business, culture, and weather. And if that’s not enough, at least in Shenzhen there’s always a Starbucks around the corner.
