In Roman Polanski’s breakthrough, Rosemary’s Baby, a pregnant wife fears her husband may have sold their unborn child to the devil. The chilling film classic gets adapted for the stage by director David Johansson (Almost Maine, The Learned Ladies). Amanda Daniels gabs about stepping into Mia Farrow’s shoes and the doomed titular character.
On her role...
I love the movie and I like anything a little deep and dark. Rosemary and Guy aren’t new to New York, but have just moved in together. Their story has its own depth: someone offers Guy his dream and he almost becomes brainwashed, which affects Rosemary. I also like that you never know if Rosemary is going crazy or if the events are really happening until the very end. I really wanted to do this part and found out I had it the day before I set out to climb Kilimanjaro.
On the play’s challenges...
We can’t switch scenes seamlessly like a camera can or do that many set changes, so we’ve had to do some melding. The director has used the movie, novel and screenplay to write it. There’s also Canadian, British, French and Swedish cast members speaking in a New York accent. There will be a workshop!
On her hopes for the show...
Even if you know what’s going to happen, I hope you feel the suspense with us, that you think that’s really creepy and get chills. I hope we can keep the film’s authenticity. Mia Farrow is brilliant in the way she portrays being in pain and does a great job at showing that downward spiral. I hope we can do the same, but not the same.
